Last Friday, July 26, our group went to Lake Merritt in Oakland. It was a beautiful day, and we saw lots of other walkers as well as numerous shore birds. We started at Children’s Fairyland and walked about half-way around the lake before taking a detour to some hidden stairs. We took the stairs up about 3 flights, past some interesting looking homes, then we walked west to descend to the lake again on the Cleveland Cascades. There is no water cascading down the steps any more, but some beautiful plantings instead. From there we continued around the lake to the Cathedral of Christ the LIght, where we enjoyed a brief respite. Continuing on our hike, we went to a Middle Eastern restaurant for a buffet lunch. It was a varied and interesting hike.
