Finley Road is an East Bay Park on the flanks of Mt. Diablo. When we turned onto Finley Road we had to stop–there were 2 adult deer beside the road standing on their hind legs, eating leaves from some trees and a mother deer nursing her spotted fawn. Just too precious. We drove on to the parking area, which is a wide place on the side of the road. There were several cars already parked there which turned out to be a group of serious hikers ready to start their hike. Since there is no parking lot, hikers have to walk about 1/2 mile to get to the park. The road goes by several small horse ranches with many beautiful horses. Once in the park, we walked along a shaded creek, then out into the open for a while, then back into shade while climbing slowly uphill. The trail goes into Mt. Diablo State Park about 1.5 miles in. The weather was cool, clear and a bit windy. We returned by the same trail we had come in on and walked a total of 4.5 miles. This is a favorite destination for out group.
